Bears Crush Browns
And Caleb Williams made some history.
Caleb Williams had arguably his best all-around performance of his career as the Chicago Bears took care of business Sunday, putting a thorough beatdown on the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field, 31-3.
Despite Cleveland’s record and offensive ineptitude, it was impressive to see Williams do it against one of the best defenses in the league. Williams completed 17 of 28 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 112.5 passer rating. His completion percentage was 60.7 percent, but his adjusted completion percentage (via PFF) was 80.8 percent.
I said it on Sunday, I’ll gladly trade 10 percent on the completion rate (relative to Ben Johnson’s lofty 70 percent standard) to see Williams make the throws that other quarterbacks can’t.
To those saying that was a bad or lucky throw, that’s only true for quarterbacks who can’t make that throw. However, Williams has proven every week that he can make those throws, and he knows it. It’s not by accident. Williams was asked about that on Sunday after the game, and he was very clear: he knows that’s in his bag of tools, and you can’t tell him otherwise.
“I can make any throw,” Williams said emphatically when asked if that throw was ill-advised by a reporter at his post-game press conference.
In the Bears locker room, DJ Moore, who was on the receiving end of that throw, backed up his quarterback’s sentiment.
“He can make a lot of throws that people can’t,” Moore said.
If you need more than the eye test or confirmation from the quarterback or his receivers, the numbers don’t lie, and his ball-protection and decision-making abilities are historically good.
