Last year, during the offseason pursuit of Alex Bregman, and then again throughout his year with the Boston Red Sox, we heard about the impact he has on other players. It wasa sufficiently consistent refrain that I believed it to be true, but I was still pretty eager to experience it with the Cubs. I knew the stories would come eventually.
In fact, the first arrived even as Jed Hoyer was introducing the Cubs’ new third baseman, sharing that Bregman immediately wanted scouting reports on his new teammates and an understanding of what they were working on so that he could speak the same language with them, so to speak. He wanted to meet with the minor league development staff so he could also understand the organization’s philosophy for the young players with whom he might soon interact. It was pretty incredible.
Now, with Spring Training having officially started, we’re getting even more.
