The first couple of weeks of Chicago Bears training camp have been the ‘Summer of Caleb (Williams)’ in Lake Forest. All of the reports out of Halas Hall have been glowing about the third-year quarterback, who’s entering his second season in Ben Johnson’s offense.
It’s not just the local media—who, if anything, have historically been harder on Bears quarterbacks than not—laying the praise on thick these days.
“Caleb Williams, by all accounts, has been a different guy this offseason—more grown up, and taking full ownership of the offense. Last summer, Ben Johnson had him drinking from a firehose, and it didn’t necessarily look pretty in camp. A year later, Williams has real proof of concept, plus command over what the Bears are trying to do. There’s joy and focus to the way he’s approaching how Johnson and the staff keep challenging him, which is a good sign that he’s really figured out how to meld his personality into the program the staff was able to establish last year.”
But leave it to Williams’ head coach Ben Johnson to throw some cold water on all of the love. Johnson said on Tuesday he felt like Williams was all of those things during the first week of camp, but feels like his quarterback has plateaued a bit this week. Johnson did say that this past week has been much like last year, where he was filling up Williams’ plate with a hefty serving of installs, and that as the installs slow down, his quarterback will start to ascend even further. For what it’s worth, Johnson said earlier in his media availability on Tuesday that he believes both units are “about 98 percent” through the installation period.
