Caleb Williams Week 2 Film Study

A step in the right direction.

The Chicago Bears are 0-2, and the vibes aren’t great in Chicago. This team has a laundry list of problems, but second-year quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t near the top — even if he is the easiest to blame.

It’s hard to see any good in a four-plus touchdown blowout loss to a division rival, but Williams was better than last week in Detroit, and I would go as far as saying that he looked good most of the game.

His head coach agrees.

“I did see significant growth,” Johnson said on Monday. “It’s not perfect yet. There’s still a number of plays where our eyes aren’t quite in the right position or we’re holding onto the ball just a tick longer than what we’re coaching. But I did see tremendous growth in terms of going through the progression. There were a few times there where we had to get to No. 3 or 4 in the read, and he was trusting his feet and his footwork and was able to get there. I did think he got better from Week 1 to Week 2. I’m encouraged by what I saw, and I’m hopeful that we’ll continue to see another leap here this week.”

Ben Johnson’s thoughts struck me as a perfect summation of what I saw on the tape on Monday. Good, not great; better, with more room to grow.

Let’s dive into some of it.
