It's Silly Season in the NFL World, Connor Bedard's Hot Streak, More
Don't fall for the bologna surrounding the NFL Draft this month. Plus, Connor Bedard has put any Calder Trophy debates to bed.
I told myself I wouldn’t do this, but after seeing it make the rounds all day Monday, we have to discuss the idiotic “take” from ESPN’s Robert Griffin III this morning on what Caleb Williams should do.
More specifically, what he shouldn’t do: play for the Chicago Bears.
I refuse to share his two-minute, thirty-two-second video that he posted on Monday morning. Before the body was cold on the Justin Fields deal, the ESPN college football analyst was doing his darndest to rake in social media interactions with an absolute fallacy of a rant regarding Caleb Williams “pulling an Eli Manning.”
Griffin argues that the Justin Fields era in Chicago should indicate that the Bears can’t develop him into the player he wants to be.
A few things here:
Ryan Poles did not draft Justin Fields. A desperate Ryan Pace did, knowing he needed lightning in a bottle to save his job.
The roster Ryan Poles inherited was a salary cap disaster that needed to be torn down to the studs before it could be rebuilt.
Fields wasn’t dealt the best hand in Chicago, namely for the two above facts, but he didn’t develop as a passer. We can acknowledge that he wasn’t dealt the best hand while still not absolving him from not being able to get past his first read after three seasons as an NFL starter.
Ryan Poles’ roster construction and salary cap management have positioned the Bears as one of the best situations a rookie quarterback could join.
Caleb Williams has said, above all else, that he wants to finish his career as a legend. While failure in Chicago can be ugly, we’ve seen that the opposite results in Chicago produce legends that never fade. Michael Jordan. Walter Payton. Ernie Banks. The list goes on and on.
Caleb Williams has already said he’s going to whoever takes him number one.
He also said that the one question he has for teams he meets with during the pre-draft process is how badly they want to win. Ryan Poles has made it clear that he’s serious about winning with what he’s created and how he’s going about it. The Justin Fields trade (of a popular locker room figure and a rabid fan base) was another example of Poles prioritizing winning.
Lastly, Griffin claims that Poles and Eberflus (whose name he couldn’t pronounce correctly) were heading into a lame-duck year. That’s as out-of-town stupid as it gets. Poles isn’t going anywhere, and quite frankly, neither is Matt Eberflus, barring a catastrophic 2024 season (which isn’t likely, given the state of the roster and the work that Flus did last season when he was faced with a disastrous mess).
Listen, I know it’s March, and with the first wave of free agency in the rearview mirror and the draft still five weeks away, we’re in a content desert, but this isn’t it. Purposely making things up and saying factually incorrect things is irresponsible. RGIII isn’t hard-up for cash; he’s got NFL money and a gig with ESPN. Stooping to this level doesn’t seem necessary.
So, here’s my reminder for the next five weeks: don’t fall for this type of content. Caleb Williams is coming to Chicago unless the Bears decide he’s not—end of story.

More on the Bears process in trading Justin Fields:
On Monday, Connor Bedard was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Month. Bedard logged seven points in three games last week (2G, 5A) and has 53 points (21G, 32A) in 54 games this season (.98 PPG rate).
Bedard has been a key factor in the Blackhawks’ recent hot streak. They have won four of their last six games since an ugly 5-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on March 2. Bedard has four goals and eight assists in those six games, which is good for a pace of two points per contest.
If there was any question about who was winning the Calder Memorial Trophy this year while Bedard was sidelined with a fractured jaw, those questions have been answered since his return.
