Cubs Competition for Sandy Alcantara
Plus: Another name to watch for the Cubs as we approach the trade deadline next month.
If you missed the latest Cubs trade rumor, Jesse Rogers has Marlins righty Edward Cabrera as a potential name to watch for Chicago as trade season begins. Cabrera is not the sort of “top-of-rotation” arm we’re all hoping the Cubs can land before July 31, but he is young, cost-controlled, has upside/top prospect pedigree, and, most importantly, can help bridge the gap in the Cubs rotation created by a flurry of injuries and underperformance from now until October.
The one potential playoff-caliber starter that is definitely on the market, Sandy Alcantara, has begun the process of raising his stock after a very slow start to the season.
Although he was facing two of the weaker teams in the league (Colorado and Pittsburgh), Alcantara has tossed back-to-back quality starts with just two earned runs, 10 Ks, and two walks over a combined 12.0 IP. Given his history and track record, teams are taking notice.
Those teams include, for example, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who, according to Bob Nightengale, are “one of the teams lurking” with their cache of prospects and never-ending pitching needs.
