Cubs Eyeing Lucas Giolito
Could a return to Chicago be possible for Giolito?
Last month, when discussing some of the deeper-cut pitchers the Chicago Cubs could potentially target in trade at the deadline, I included Boston Red Sox righty Lucas Giolito in the “hey there are also these guys” conversation. At the time, it was still very unclear whether the Red Sox would emerge as sellers, and it was also pretty darn unclear whether a returning-from-surgery Giolito would look sufficiently compelling as an addition by late-July. I wanted to hold out for the possibility, though.
Since then, the Red Sox have gone from several games under .500 to several games over .500, and find themselves tied for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. With a 50/50 shot at making the postseason by the estimates today, there’s no way we could confidently say they’ll become sellers in a few weeks. It’s possible, but only possible.
