Jed Hoyer Speaks

The theme of Hoyer’s session was simple: the Cubs offense has to be better.

Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer was in Milwaukee today to speak with the media. The theme of Hoyer’s session was simple: the Cubs offense has to be better.

“I don’t know what more to make of it,” Hoyer said. “That is the reality — no one’s hitting. … The hard part is there’s no team meeting to snap your fingers and do it. You have to come out of these things. We don’t know when, but I’m very confident we’ll come out of this, and we’ll start scoring runs, and I do think there’s gonna be a cumulative exhale.”

Hoyer mentioned Pete Crow-Armstrong (or someone like him) as a player who could make his way back to Chicago, this time in an everyday role, insinuating that veteran players could lose at-bats to younger players very soon if things don’t change for the Cubs struggling offense.

“I think one of the hardest aspects of all of these jobs is (that) you want to be patient with guys with track records, and you know that you’re going to have these struggles during certain times,” Hoyer said. “But you can take that patience too far. At some point, you have to have a sense of urgency, and trying to figure out when that timing is, is really difficult.”

You can read more of Hoyer’s comments and Brett’s reaction to them in his column this afternoon:
