Cubs Linked to Keller, Bednar
One insider has the Cubs linked to a pair of Pirates hurlers this afternoon.
Although a relatively small cluster of starting pitchers get the bulk of the Cubs trade rumor attention at this early part of trade season (Sandy Alcantara, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly are mentioned most often), there are quite a few starting pitchers who are (1) potentially going to be available, and (2) potentially interesting to the Cubs, specifically. We know they target certain guys because they are expected to be good, generally, but also because the Cubs believe they can unlock something in particular.
We also know that, although the need for a starting pitcher is the most striking thing about the Cubs right now, they are almost certainly also going to wade into the reliever market. They always do, and if you are a team with aspirations to make a deep run in the postseason, you truly cannot have too many late-inning-type arms. If you roster gets crowded, you figure that out later.
