Cubs Payroll Update: Where Do Things Stand After the Kyle Tucker Trade and Carson Kelly Signing?
So, where are we for 2025?
Although trades are at the top of all of our minds as the Cubs’ big offseason continues, Jed Hoyer will eventually wade back into the free-agent market (perhaps for a closer?).
To that end, I thought it was worth resetting the team’s financial position with respect to the luxury tax. After all, the Cubs did trade away two big leaguers (Isaac Paredes and Hayden Wesneski), traded for another two (Kyle Tucker and Eli Morgan), and signed a catcher out of free agency (Carson Kelly). There’s been some movement! And thus, the numbers have changed.
So, where are we for 2025? Let’s do some simple math, starting from where we were a few weeks ago when the Cubs’ luxury tax payroll sat around $201M per Roster Resource.
