Today Was a Perfect Day for a Cubs Off Day
Tomorrow is a great day to start a two-game series with the White Sox to get things heading back in the right direction.
Today was a great day for a Cubs off day. Tomorrow is a great day to start a two-game series with the White Sox to get things heading back in the right direction.
Speaking of the White Sox, could Michael Kopech be a low-risk investment for the Cubs ahead of the trade deadline?
since returning to the Chicago bullpen in 2024, Kopech has a 3.86 ERA and 12.27 K/9 in 24 appearances for the White Sox. Save for a rough outing against the Baltimore Orioles last weekend, Kopech has allowed one earned run since the start of May and has registered three saves and a 10.61 K/9.
His velocity on his four-seamer is as good as it’s been in years, averaging 98.9 mph and consistently hitting triple digits. He throws his fastball 78.3 percent of the time and has a 30 percent whiff rate and opponents are hitting .188 and slugging .375 against his top offering. His slider, which he throws 11 percent of the time, has been put in play a bunch this season (.294 opposing batting average), but has plenty of swing and miss potential (34.6 percent whiff rate).
Kopech is making $3 million this season and has another year of arbitration in 2025 before he’s eligible to reach free agency after the 2025 season. He’s cost-controlled for the next year and a half, looking as good as he has since his last season in the bullpen, and he won’t break the bank in a trade like a Mason Miller or someone of that tier would. He can be an immediate buy-low option for the Cubs, who may need to do something to address their bullpen woes.
