Caleb Williams called Ben Johnson a “mastermind” on Monday night, and after watching the film on Tuesday, it’s easy to see why Williams feels that way.
“He is a mastermind,” Williams said of his head coach after Chicago’s Week 6 victory over the Commanders. “Being able to have him; sometimes he’s on the headset and he’s like ‘this is a great play call right here, here we go,’ and he did that today, and he has all the confidence in himself and those little things actually provide confidence (to Williams) when you’re about to go call the play … The belief and trust in him, that he’s dialing it up, and he does every time.”
Ben Johnson talking up his playcalls to himself and Williams in the headset is a diabolical level of cockyness, and I love it. So do his players. It gives them the confidence they need to win the gritty games they have had the past two weeks.
Linebacker T.J. Edwards explained on Tuesday on 670 The Score that there was an unwavering confidence on the Chicago sideline on Monday night:
“I felt like more than anything, no matter which way the game was kind of flowing at the time, no one was flinching. We all expected to win. You can kind of feel a calmness on the sideline that we’re going to get back in this and make a play.”
Johnson’s confidence in his calls is fair, and even in a game where he said he had one of his smallest menus of plays, his savvy was on display plenty. Let’s dive into some of my favorite designs from Week 6.
