It’s Tuesday afternoon, so I’m emptying my Week 1 notebook as we turn the page and focus on the Bears’ Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, starting tomorrow morning.
I said it in my Friday column: Week 1rarely tells you everything, but it tells you something. Week 1 told me that Chicago’s offense has taken the step forward we’d hoped for in year two under Ben Johnson. It also told me that Caleb Williams did the same.
I’ve spent two days watching the film from that game, on repeat, through multiple lenses, as I do every week of the season. What I saw was an offensive design that is so balanced and so dangerous that opposing teams should be terrified. I’m not exaggerating. Carolina spent most of the day in zone coverage, likely because they’re afraid they can’t match all of the Bears’ weaponry in man coverage. Williams ate that zone defense alive. He did almost everything right. He made almost every correct decision when he had options. That’s scary for opposing defenses.
