Kyle Hendricks' Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Start Continues

Hendricks allowed seven earned runs against the Padres as they lost the rubber match in San Diego.

Well, that wasn’t ideal. The Cubs had the opportunity to right their wrong from Monday night and take the rubber match against the Padres last night. Instead, Kyle Hendricks was shelled for seven runs, and his tough start continued.

Hendricks allowed seven runs on nine hits (two of which left the park) in five innings of work.

Hendricks has now allowed 17 earned runs this season, tied for the second-most by a Cubs pitcher in their first three games of the season since 1913 (h/t Jesse Rogers).

Hendricks’ ERA stands at a whopping 12.08 this season, and he has allowed five home runs in just 12.2 innings of work.

On the bright side, Michael Busch hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning off of old friend Dylan Cease, the only Cubs offense of the day. Busch now has two long-balls on the season.

Outside of Busch, the offense was in a slumber. Dylan Cease allowed two runs on two hits and struck out seven in six innings for San Diego as the Padres took the rubber match in the series. This is the Cubs’ first series loss since the opening series against the Rangers.

With the off day today, I will have the Cubservations from this series in tomorrow’s newsletter. Until then, Michael has more on the Cubs’ loss to the Padres in last night’s Enhanced Box Score.
