I’m not sure there’s been a more controversial GOOD player in my time covering the Cubs than Ian Happ. What I mean is, over the length of his career with the Cubs, Happ has inarguably been a good overall player. He averages about 3.0 WAR a year, hit .243/.341/.442/115 wRC+, and has won a lot of Gold Gloves. And yet, because of his three-true-outcome style of play at the plate, some very lengthy cold stretches, a perception that he’s not clutch, etc., Happ has his fair share of detractors in the fan base. It’s just been an odd journey.
The question is: now that the Cubs have bowed out of the playoffs, is that journey now over?
