Kyle Tucker, Cam Smith, Jed Hoyer, and a Little Cognitive Dissonance

Brett believes it's way too early to begin the "what might have been," conversation.

The cognitive dissonance I’ve been feeling about all the Cam Smith stories I’ve seen haven’t really been about “what might have been,” or “can you believe the Cubs whiffed on that guy,” or whatever. That’s not what I’m saying.

For one thing, it’s just waaaaaay too early to be thinking that stuff. I wish Smith the best, and it’s wildly impressive that he’s made the Astros less than a year after the Cubs drafted him. We’ll see what happens as the year (and more after that) play out.

And for another thing, we knew when the Cubs tried to acquire Kyle Tucker, the price was going to be painful. That’s always the nature of trades for superstars. Even when it doesn’t work out well (and you can fairly criticize the trade in hindsight, because getting it right is the job of a front office), you understand the price that was paid at the time it was paid—no cognitive dissonance there for me.

Instead, here’s where my cognitive dissonance comes in: we now know some additional things about what the Cubs were or were not going to do after the Tucker trade that slightly re-frames the value the Cubs gave up in that trade.
