Let's Talk About Matt Shaw

Matt Shaw has had some nice results, but the underlying data isn't very convincing.

When the Cubs sent Matt Shaw down to Iowa in mid-May, he was slashing just .172/.294/.241 (63 wRC+). So any conversation about him – at all – right now has to begin with praise for the changes he made at the plate (reduced leg kick, for one) and the results he achieved in the 73 PAs since he was re-promoted: .319/.356/.464 (133 wRC+). That’s just good old-fashioned hard work and talent shining through.
