Lofty Goals for Caleb Williams

Ben Johnson and his second-year quarterback laid out some lofty goals today as veterans reported to training camp.

Caleb Williams’ rookie season wasn’t perfect.

He’ll be the first to admit it. “I had some ups and downs in games [last season],” Williams said on Tuesday when he met the media for the first time this season at Halas Hall.

Despite throwing for 3,500-plus yards and 20 touchdowns—and creating plenty of plays that flashed enough brilliance to remind everyone why he was taken first overall by the Bears—there were some inconsistencies for the rookie.

Pocket awareness, pre-snap operation, and deep ball accuracy were among them.

Still, Williams isn’t shying away from expectations as he begins his second season in the NFL, setting some lofty goals for himself, including becoming the franchise’s first 4,000-yard passer and completing more than 70 percent of his passes, something his new head coach challenged him on this season.

“Being the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears history is a goal of mine,” Williams said. “Seventy percent completion [rate]; that helps the team, keeps us on the field, and puts us in better positions. Other than that, just trying to go down [the field] and score the most points we can with each drive.”

Williams’ most important goal is simple: win.

“You gotta go win,” Williams said. “That’s success for me. That’s success for the team. That’s all that we wish for and all that I wish for.”
