Matt Shaw Update: “Not Too Far” from a Return

Plus: Owen Caissie is among the first cuts for the Cubs in Mesa.

Matt Shaw’s minor oblique issue has proceeded pretty much like all minor oblique issues in baseball since time immemorial: everything always takes longer than your most optimistic case.

That doesn’t mean Shaw has a more serious injury or has suffered a setback, but it’s been over two weeks since Shaw first felt something in his side and about ten days since he was theoretically back to light throwing and hitting. But he’s still not at full go and hasn’t appeared in a Cactus League game.

The latest is not bad news or anything, and I’m sure there remains an abundantly cautious approach given all the circumstances. But it doesn’t sound like Shaw is on the doorstep of a spring debut.
