Possible Cubs Free Agency Targets
Although a full accounting isn’t quite there yet, we do have a good sense of how much money the Cubs will be available to spend this offseason.
With Cody Bellinger opting in, Drew Smyly’s option declined, and a $243M luxury tax as the very-probably-general upper limit, the Chicago Cubs should have about ~$50M in 2025 dollars to spend this offseason. That number might go up a little with some non-tender calls — and down a little if they want to preserve some in-season flexibility — but that’s a pretty comfortable estimate in my mind.
In terms of what type of players they’ll be targeting, I see three primary groups: A power bat, a mid-to-top rotation starter, and some relief help.
Now that the MLB Free Agent Projections are available at both FanGraphs and The Athletic, I thought we could take a look at some of the more commonly rumored Cubs free agent targets and their projected price tag.
