A month ago, if Seiya Suzuki came up with two outs and the bases loaded in extra innings, we would have all started penciling in the out into our scorebooks. Strikeout, popout, whatever … a good outcome wouldn’t be expected. But last night, in the exact situation, I felt … calm? It was strange. Even though I knew, instinctively, that Suzuki had been hitting better lately, I still felt surprised at how confident I was that he would come through.
And come through he did with a 2-RBI line drive to left field.
That was Suzuki’s first and only hit of the game, but it was a BIG one. Those two runs wound up making the difference, as the Cubs held on to win by just one.
But that hit represented more than that.
