Seiya Suzuki to the IL with Oblique Injury, Nico's Big Night
The Cubs will be without one of their best hitters for at least a month.
On Monday, the Cubs promoted Alexander Canario from Triple-A, which is exciting. But the reason why is far less exciting. Canario will be taking the roster spot of Seiya Suzuki, who will be hitting the IL with an oblique injury that will have him on the shelve for at least a month.
Suzuki suffered the same injury last spring, which cost him roughly six weeks of Spring Training and the first half of April in the regular season.
My pick to become a legitimate MVP candidate this season was slashing .305/.368/.525 with three home runs, 13 RBI, and a 139 wRC+ in his first 15 games of the season.
Alexander Canario will likely get some run in Suzuki’s place. He was hitting .269/.377/.481 (123 wRC+) with a 13.1% walk rate and 24.6% strikeout rate. He’s had a hot last four games, with seven hits, including a double and a homer.

Cubs second-baseman Nico Hoerner played hero on Monday night in Arizona. He got the Cubs started in the ninth inning while they trailed by a run with a base hit, scored from second base on a wild pitch, and then drove in the game-winning run in extra innings to give the Cubs a victory over the Diamondbacks last night.
