Shōta Shoves in the Home Opener, Morel's Little League Home Run Lifts Cubs Past Rockies

What a day it was at the Friendly Confines as Shōta Imanaga dazzled and Christopher Morel provided the jolt that lifted the Cubs over the Rockies.

Former Chicago Cub Kris Bryant got a warm welcome when he stepped to the dish in the top of the second inning for the Rockies. He would reach on an error by Christopher Morel (No. 2 on the season), but that would be the last Rockies base-runner to reach until Charlie Blackmon broke up Shõta Imanaga’s no-hit bid in the sixth inning.

Imanaga would surrender singles to Blackmon and Brendan Rodgers in that sixth inning before picking up a huge strikeout to end the inning, keeping his shutout intact through six frames.

What a day for Shōta, who lived up to the hype in his first MLB regular season outing on Monday against Colorado. Imanaga pitched six innings and allowed no runs on two hits while racking up nine strikeouts and zero walks. It was an absolute gem of a performance.

You may remember that I pointed out on Monday morning that the Rockies entered this contest averaging 8.75 K/9, and Imanaga took advantage with nine punchouts.

Imanaga’s performance was the story, but the Cubs' offense in the sixth inning guaranteed him a victory in his MLB debut. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki hit back-to-back singles against Rockies starter Dakota Hudson to open the sixth, and after a Cody Bellinger flyout, Christopher Morel made up for his second-inning error in a big way.

Morel slapped a single into left field, which would have loaded the bases with one out for the Cubs in a scoreless ballgame, but Rockies left-fielder Nolan Jones whiffed on the play, allowing Morel’s would-be single to roll to the left field wall, scoring Happ and Suzuki. Another error on Jones, this one of the throwing variety, allowed Morel to scamper home from third base to cap off the Little League home run to make it 3-0 Cubs.

The Cubs would pick up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Cody Bellinger two-run single, and Drew Smyly would close the door in the ninth inning for the Cubs as they won their home opener against the Rockies and moved to 2-2 on the season.
