The Cubs Are Stuck in the Past of Player Spending, and It's an Absolute Shame
Sigh.
Can you imagine if the Chicago Cubs traded a haul of players and top prospects for one year of a superstar player — a player who ultimately took the Cubs to the World Series — and then that player signed with the White Sox in free agency one year later? That’s basically what happened last night to Yankees fans, who might finally accept that the Steve Cohen-owned Mets are not the punchline they used to be. Here’s hoping a super billionaire never buys the White Sox. I don’t think I could handle that.
Then again, maybe I don’t have to worry about the White Sox (or Cubs, for that matter) ever spending that much on a player. That’s just not their style.
One user on X (@JayHayKid) conveniently assembled all the largest contracts signed by each team in MLB (and I added to whom each deal belongs), and the Chicago Cubs are just so painfully far down the list.
