South Side to South Loop? White Sox Reportedly Discussing a New Stadium in the South Loop Neighborhood

The Chicago White Sox are in "serious talks" to build a new stadium just months after Jerry Reinsdorf met with the Mayor of Nashville.

Of course, the White Sox would build a new stadium after I moved thousands of miles away.

As stadium deals go, this might never happen, and if it does, there’s a good chance it’ll be the better part of a decade from now. Nonetheless, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Wednesday evening that the White Sox are in “serious talks” with Related Midwest, which owns a 62-acre parcel of land called “The 78” located at Roosevelt Road and Clark Street in the South Loop neighborhood.

For my entire life, and likely yours, the White Sox have resided at 35th & Shields in the Bridgeport neighborhood. But, their lease at Guaranteed Rate Field — which the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority owns — expires in 2029.

On Wednesday, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a joint statement to the Sun-Times:

“We met to discuss the historic partnership between the team and Chicago and the team’s ideas for remaining competitive in Chicago in perpetuity,” the joint statement said.

If the White Sox did pursue this location, they would be able to correct my lifelong gripe over the stadium's positioning, which doesn’t have the Chicago skyline in the backdrop behind the outfield concourse.
